Above the idyllic village of Svibno once stood the majestic Svibno Castle. Today, at the foot of the castle hill, an interpretive window with a model of the castle offers visitors a glimpse into the past, while a mobile app further enhances the castle exploration experience.

The Ostrovrhar Family and Svibno Castle

The Ostrovrhar knights were a noble family that played a significant role in the history of the region around Svibno and Radeče. As early as the 12th century, they controlled the cable ferry traffic and the Sava River crossing. The most famous knight of the Ostrovrhar family is undoubtedly Viljem, the suitor of Turjaška Rozamunda (Rosamund of Turjak), from the well-known poem by Prešeren.

Svibno Castle, which once rose above the village, is believed to have been built as early as 985, with the first historical mention of it appearing around 1175. In the 14th century, the power of the Ostrovrhar family began to wane, and most of their estates, including Svibno Castle, eventually passed into the hands of the Counts of Celje. In the 17th century, the castle was looted and with time fell into ruin.

Peek through the window into the medieval past

Peek through the interpretive window, which reminds visitors of Svibno Castle of the importance, power, and political influence of the Ostrovrhar knights in the past. The view through the window offers a glimpse into the challenging terrain on which the castle was built. An integral part of the interpretive window is a 3D schematic representation of Svibno Castle on the "windowsill," uniquely crafted by local artist Bojan Sumrak.
