The story of the 4.1712 km long forest railway and its line, which boasts the largest track width in Slovenia (84.8 cm), is interesting and very special.

The second forest railway built in Slovenia

The forest railway was once a traffic route for transporting timber from the remote forests of Jatna to the steam sawmill in the valley. The simple forest railway at Jagnjenica near Radeče was built after the Idrija Lauf railway as the second forest railway in Slovenia

Experience the forest railway

Although there are few remnants, you can travel back to the times when the creaking of wood-loaded forest carts was heard with just a little imagination. Take a walk along the tracks of the forest railway and see a replica of the forest cart to get a better feel of how things used to be. The replica was made as part of the project Stara šola za nove ideje (Old school for new ideas) and stands in Jagnjenica, opposite the entrance to the Stara šola natural values interpretation center. See what challenges the railway builders faced and what dangers the drivers faced on a daily basis on the route itself.

Carefully planned and almost entirely made of wood

The railway was designed by forestry expert Mavricij Scheyer, and in its construction Scheyer used and perfected the technology of the Idrija Lauf railway (the first forest railway in Slovenia).

It was made almost entirely of wood, with the exception of trolley wheels and other smaller parts of the device that were made of steel. The railway sleepers of the line were visible until 1950, but today there are few material remains left.
